When Is the Best Time to Lay Turf?
New turf establishes most easily during cooler, naturally wetter parts of the year when the ground is workable and the grass is not under excessive heat or drought stress. Autumn through to early spring can therefore be particularly suitable for turfing, provided the ground is not frozen or waterlogged.
Turfing may also be possible outside this period when conditions are suitable, but warmer and drier weather increases the importance of reliable watering during establishment. We assess the weather, ground conditions and the customer's ability to maintain the required watering before recommending whether the timing is appropriate.
We would rather advise you to delay the work than install turf in conditions that are likely to compromise the finished result.

Before any turfing or planting work begins, we assess the existing ground carefully, including soil condition, levels, drainage, access, shade, surrounding features and how the finished area will be used. This allows us to recommend the right preparation and installation approach for the site rather than treating every garden in the same way.
Where required, this may include removing unsuitable material, improving levels, preparing the soil and creating a suitable base before turf is laid or planting is completed. We will explain what preparation is needed, what is included in the work and any limitations that could affect the final result.
Once the turf is laid or planting is complete, we provide straightforward establishment advice so you know what to do next. Laying the turf is only the beginning of establishing a healthy new lawn. Newly laid turf needs suitable moisture while its roots establish into the prepared soil beneath it, particularly during warmer or drier weather.
Before we leave, we will explain the watering required, when normal foot traffic can begin and when the lawn is ready for its first cut. The exact timing depends on weather and establishment rather than simply reaching a fixed number of days.
For the first mow, the turf should be properly rooted and the grass allowed to reach a suitable height before being cut on a higher mower setting.
The customer must be able to carry out the agreed watering and early-care plan. If site conditions, shade, drainage, pets or anticipated use are likely to affect establishment, we will discuss this before the work goes ahead.
Where a drainage, soil or structural landscaping issue needs addressing before turfing, we will say so rather than laying a new lawn over a problem that is likely to return.
